Neighborhoods in Council Bluffs

Though Council Bluffs is itself a relatively small suburban town, there are distinct neighborhood divisions. Most are fairly historic and served as settlement homes for various groups of railway workers. A few of the most notable areas include:

  • The West End, which lies east of the Missouri River and near the Union Pacific Transfer rail yards. The mature, tree-lined streets, historic Central Missouri River bridge and turn of the century architecture are inspiring enough to have made their way into such films as "Citizen Ruth" and "About Schmidt."
  • Madison Avenue/Woodbury Avenue, with its low 4.3% vacancy rate, is popular with the citys families and is a surprisingly good area to find rent to own homes. Theres a lot of dining and shopping nearby, including the busy Mall of the Bluffs.
  • The South End is known locally as "Little Copenhagen." The venerable neighborhood features the RailsWest Railroad Museum and the Longfellow School.
  • Oakland/Fairview is the home of the Lincoln Monument, which commemorates the spot where our 16th president established the location of the Transcontinental Railroad in 1859.
  • Dumfries is located on the eastern side of Council Bluffs and includes newer homes than other parts of the city. While average home values exceed $170,000, rental rates are affordable at just over $610 per month. With the good cost of living, this is an excellent area to consider a rent to own situation.
