  • Numerous attractions and activities! For a relatively small city, Roanoke Rapids has a huge amount of attractions. For example, at the Roanoke Canal Museum you can rediscover the city's past as a major trading place. Sylvan Heights Bird Park has the world's largest collection of waterfowl and an up and coming attraction is the Carolina Crossroads. When this is finished it will include an RV park, theater, amphitheater, billiard center and rock-and-roll theme park.
  • Acres of green space to run around in! Roanoke has 13 parks, including Emry Park and Chockoyotte Park. Within its 7 acres, Emry Park has covered picnic shelters, playgrounds, walking trails, horseshoe pits, tennis courts and a softball field. In 2014, the city earned a $15,000 grant to improve their parklands. Some of the money went to baseball fields at which they held baseball tournaments throughout the summer.
  • A renter's haven! If you don't fancy paying high monthly rent or rent to own rates or just can't afford to live in a big city like the nearby Raleigh, then Roanoke Rapids is an excellent option. 45 percent of the population rents a property, from studios to detached houses, at median price of only $531. A four-bedroom house can be found for as low as $700 a month. Surprisingly, one of the cheapest and best places to rent is in the city center where you can also find the city's best restaurants, such as Oscar's Restaurant and the Hunan Chinese Restaurant.
  • A variety of house prices! The median house price in Roanoke is $110,000, which is up from $72,000 in 2000. Even though the cheapest place to rent is the city center, that is where the most expensive houses are for sale at an average price of $134,000. However, if you are willing to live away from the Roanoke River in an area such as Belmont, the median house value is $69,000.
